It was a bit of a learning curve, for me. You spend more time counting out the bars than you do listening to the music and understanding it. It's a situation that you have to grow into. They wanted me to play note for note behind them, and I wouldn't do it. Together they were an all-star group. You were able to function, so you never really addressed any of that stuff. I completely understand how they felt and why, and I want to make sure thats clear. Because then I started to become a medical guy. The manager, Herbie, fought for me to be in that band, when they werent sure. I agree to that, but I don't agree that every time you have a fill, you have to play exactly the same thing that's on the record. If you play the bass and snare at the same time, you 'llfind that the snare drum sound disappears. **You were one of the few people in America to know how The Sopranos ended, before it aired. And so at that point, I knew I had some chemistry writing with him, even though it was very different from anything Id done before. You had that urge, but you didnt act on it. Theyre doing what theyre doing because they feel its what they want to do, and Im doing what Im doing because its what I feel I wanna do. I spent 18 months with them, but they were going through a slow decline. Other times, I might just powerhouse it right through, depending on the time I have, what the audience is like, and what's going on. It felt like it was toast, and I felt like we should just stop. And those lyrics are a big part of it. Did you get burned out? A lot of times, that goes down a lot better than sitting there being a technician. That was the last time. It feels better. I think anything beyond a 5 or 6-minute solo is a waste of time. From all of it. ManagementHerbie was freakin out, he was lovin it. AD: In my solo, yeah. Im sure they werent sure about Robert, either, you know what I mean? I didnt need any of the other affirmations. But I appreciated the musicality, the ability to jam. And so I was always livin on that edge. We lived together when I first joined the band. Thats an interesting comment. I could play million notes a minute and get away with it. And when it parks back out in the audience, at the end of the song, I walk offstage. Weve tried out a few singers. 'Oh no, this is not for me, I went home, and the next after noon John Mayall called me up and said, "I was sitting in the audience last night and I was wondering if you'd come down and sit in with my band." I got a phone call from Jon, and I could tell Neal was on the phone, cause I can tell when the line levels down, and I could hear him breathing, I think. [laughs] But in those days it was a bomb. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the band members. We were all ready to roll. Yeah. So I felt, seeing as I'm doing that, I might as well be running my own band and making some cash, because we were on a paid wage routine with him. **You went on to make a string of hit records with Steve. Then I did the A Hard Road album with him, and that helped me understand the songs a little better. RM: I noticed you using traditional grip at times. The way I play is based on feeling-not on something I've been told to do. And I said, I am _not _gonna tour and sit on a stool. Bye," I left London and went to San Francisco to check out Journey, because they had been calling me up ever since l had been with Bowie. **. So I went to this club and we chatted about me coming over and joining his band, but 1 couldn't give an answer because l wasn't sure if I wanted to disband my group. But the greatest thing was, I really felt in my heart that Neal was happy to see me. So, yeah. So Don Ellis took the liberty, about two weeks after that, of sending our tapes to Herbie Herbert, who at the time was managing Journey. AD: Sink would be the word. I was taken to London by the Mojos. I was against that. And Ive played some of the stuff for friends, and for some people that arent afraid to tell me the truth. You broke out of prison, and immediately started thinking about how to get back in. I just work out on that and tap my feet on the floor. No rehearsal-just get on the stage and play. Then shortly thereafter, I called Jon and Neal together. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. Aynsley Dunbar Age 2022. Steve! When I did the "Stable of Stars"' ad for Ludwig, I was talking to a lot of people l didn't know, and they were the drummers for certain bands. But I don't feel I want to jump on that particular bandwagon. We were destroyed by thathe was a wonderful singer, a wonderful bass player, and a great guy, and he was part of a real interesting chemistry that Columbia wanted to sign. And so I thought that was okay. AD: It was sort of progressive rock. When he was touring behind his solo record? So you can't rehash what you did before if somebody else is playing something new. Did you feel betrayed, by the fact that theyd been looking at other vocalists? But they didnt have any quote hit records, and werent on the radio much. Anything worth anything goes down the path of discussion, disagreement and greatness, I think.
